★ TERRY'S STORY ★

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg in 1958 and grew up in Port Coquitlam, B.C., where he loved basketball more than anything — even if he had to practise harder than everyone else to make the team. He never quit. That was Terry.

In March 1977, at only 18 years old, Terry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma — bone cancer — and his right leg was amputated above the knee. But in that hospital ward, surrounded by other kids fighting cancer, Terry found something bigger than basketball: a dream. Inspired by the story of Dick Traum, an amputee who ran the New York Marathon, Terry decided he would run clear across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called it the Marathon of Hope.

On April 12, 1980, Terry dipped his artificial leg in the cold Atlantic at St. John's, Newfoundland — Mile Zero!! — and started running. Day after day, 42 kilometres at a time, through six provinces, through pain that would have flattened any of us. Small towns became huge crowds. Canada stopped watching the news and started cheering the news.

Then, on September 1, 1980, after 143 days and 5,373 km, the cancer came back in his lungs and Terry was forced to stop just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario. He told the world: "I hope people will take off and continue where I left off." We did, Terry. We still do.

Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, one month shy of his 23rd birthday. On September 13, 1981 the very first Terry Fox Run was held in over 760 communities — 300,000 people laced up and raised $3.5 million!! Every September since, millions more run, walk and wheel in his name. NEVER GIVE UP!!
